Grid Items are objects that appear in Alternate UniverZ. Some grid items benefit the player, while others may be a nuisance instead.

Grid Items

Player's House

In Player's House, there are tombstones. They can block straight-shot projectiles from hitting the zombies. They can also occupy a tile, preventing any plants from being planted there (though Grave Buster can be planted to remove the tombstone). Tombstones can appear naturally in Player's House and some holidays. It can also summon zombies via the Necromancy ambush, such as in DA-IX.

Ancient Egypt

In Ancient Egypt, there are Egyptian tombstones. They function similarly to the tombstones in Player's House. These tombstones can be created by Tomb Raiser Zombies and Tomb Fest Raisers, meaning it is possible for these tombstones to appear in other worlds as well, such as Far Future (FFX-IV), Dark Ages (DAX-VI), and The Springscapade (TS-V). Grave Buster can remove these tombstones too.

In Ancient Egypt's minigame, Tombstone Hunt, more variations on the tombstones are present. Reinforced tombstones are identical to ordinary tombstones, but with double the toughness. Outside of Tombstone Hunt, these will appear from the barrels of Birthday Delivery Rollers. Zombie tombstones will release a certain zombie (one type per level) upon destruction. Plant tombstones will release a random plant upon destruction. Grave Buster can remove all of the aforementioned tombstones.

Pirate Seas

In Pirate Seas, there are planks. They connect the zombies' ship to the player's, allowing zombies to passage normally onto your lawn. While some rows do not have any planks, they can still be attacked by zombies traveling halfway across the lawn.

Wild West

In Wild West, there are minecarts and rails. While most plants cannot be placed on a minecart rail except for flying plants like Rotobaga or Void Orchid, plants can be placed into a minecart and moved along the rail at will. If a flying plant is placed in a minecart, it will not be able to be moved from its spot like any normal plant would be.

In Netronome, a Timeless Avenue community level, there are western tombstones. They behave similarly to the aforementioned tombstones, except being more fragile and also summoning zombies in a rhythmic fashion. Grave Buster can remove these tombstones as well.

Far Future

In Far Future, there are Power Tiles. Power Tiles come in different colors, with different symbols corresponding to each color. Power Tiles link Plant Food to any plant on a Power Tile of the same color. After Plant Food has been given to a plant on a Power Tile, it will also activate Plant Food effects on plants of the same color as the previous Power Tile shortly after. This gives a distinct advantage to the player, as Power Tiles do not hinder the player.

Certain levels that take place in Far Future (like TB-IV and Cycles) contains futuristic minecarts and rails, which act identically to their western counterpart. Furthermore, in Shields Up!, a Timeless Avenue community level, there are futuristic tombstones, which behave like normal tombstones, except that they can also spawn shields similar to those of Shield Zombie's.

Dark Ages

In Dark Ages, there are medieval tombstones. Just like the ones in Ancient Egypt, they are obstacles that block projectiles. However, they can now occasionally spawn by themselves, and have two other variants of itself marked with a sun and Plant Food, which spawn 50 sun or a Plant Food when destroyed respectively. If a medieval tombstone spawns in a tile occupied with a plant, the plant will be pushed to another empty tile. If there are no empty tiles on the lawn, the plant will disappear instantly.

Reanimator Zombie, upon defeat, drops a Summoning Tomb on the tile he died on. It crushes the plant it lands on and summons Plagued Peasants constantly. After a while, it explodes into even more Plagued Peasants across multiple lanes. Summoning Tomb cannot be consumed by Grave Buster.

In the Dark Ages minigame Dark Alchemy, there are various types of potions. Potions will grant zombies with either a speed boost (orange) or a toughness boost (purple). In TB-V more types of potions appear, with some granting a buttering effect (yellow) or freezing effect (blue) on a zombie. The player cannot plant anything on the potions, and a potion can only be removed when a zombie consumes its effect or if it is crushed, for example by Barrel Roller Zombie or a Gargantuar.

Lost City

In Lost City, there are Gold Tiles. Every 24 seconds that a plant remains on a Gold Tile, it will create 25 sun. It will not create sun instantly when planted on for the first time.

When Imp Porter dies, he will drop a backpack behind where he fell, which blocks projectiles and can only be removed after receiving 700 damage.

When Imp Porter comes across a Gold Tile, he will fall and disappear, with his backpack crushing him and any plants on the Gold Tile to become a tent. Tents will block projectiles like the backpack would but have the additional effect of spawning either an Adventurer Zombie or a Conehead Adventurer Zombie every 12-18 seconds.

There are also Flame Traps, which release green flames across their row for 2 columns ahead and behind which deal 600 damage across a few seconds to plants and grounded zombies. They will activate when planted on or if a zombie touches them. After that, they enter a cooldown before being able to release green flames again.

Vertical Flame Traps also appear, functioning similarly to their horizontal counterparts. However, they deal damage to the tile directly above and below, rather than to the left and right.

Frostbite Caves

In Frostbite Caves, there are ice blocks. They can appear at the start of the level containing frozen plants or zombies, which will be released when the ice block is destroyed after taking 700 damage. These frozen blocks will also block projectiles similar to tombstones. One can also be formed from a plant when frozen from Hunter Zombies or frost winds. Troglobites can also push frozen blocks (usually containing Yeti Imps or Sasquatch Imps) into the lawn, as well as pushing other ice blocks on the lawn. Hot Potato can melt ice blocks.

There are also ice floes, which have a zombie hand frozen inside ice floating on water, with its index finger pointing either up or down. This finger determines the lane the zombies that get in contact with it will go towards. Plants cannot be planted on ice floes.

Neon Mixtape Tour

In Neon Mixtape Tour, Arcade Zombie will push their arcade cabinets into the lawn. When the 8-bit jam plays, arcade cabinets will spawn either an 8-Bit Zombie, 8-Bit Conehead Zombie, or 8-Bit Buckethead Zombie every 15-20 seconds until destroyed or the jam switches. In NMTX-VII and Invaded NMTX-VII, special arcade cabinets will appear which spawn different zombie types and have much higher health. Arcade cabinets are destroyed after receiving 800 damage; special arcade cabinets are destroyed after receiving 3200 damage.

Holiday Cheer

There are no grid items associated with Holiday Cheer.

Hearts of Flesh

There are no grid items associated with Hearts of Flesh.

The Springscapade

When a Mystery Egg is destroyed, it will act as a grid item, blocking projectiles similarly to tombstones, albeit more fragile. They will also summon one zombie from The Springscapade (usually a Chick Imp) and will stay on that tile until they absorb enough damage and break.

Summer Splashdown

In Summer Splashdown, there are fireworks, which deal 13 damage to both plants and zombies in a 3x3 area every second. They cannot be removed by the player, but zombies will stop at them to eat. They will be destroyed if the zombies deal 2000 damage to them.

Tombstones also make an appearance in Summer Splashdown and will summon zombies every flag wave.

Lawn of Doom

In Lawn of Doom, tombstones are present once again. However, unlike in both Dark Ages and Summer Splashdown, zombies will be summoned silently without any warnings.

Cheerful Return

In Cheerful Return, there are present boxes. They act similar to ice blocks from Frostbite Caves, but plants can be planted on them, their surprises are more difficult to see, and they cannot be melted by Hot Potato. Toymaker Troglobite can push present boxes into the lawn which contains various zombies.

Green Gold Rush

Replicator Reanimator, upon defeat, drops a Replicating Grave on the tile he is on. It crushes the plant it is on and releases multiple smaller Replicator Reanimators after a long while. These smaller Replicator Reanimators also drop smaller Replicating Graves upon defeat, crushing tiles and releasing multiple Leprechaun Imps after a while. Grave Buster can consume small Replicating Graves, but takes three times longer than usual to bust.

Remedy for Love

In Remedy for Love, there are companion machines. When a zombie passes by its lever (even a hypnotized zombie), the machine will produce another zombie, then will enter a 20 second cooldown.

There are five variants: one that spawns Valentines' Zombies, one that spawns Valentines' Coneheads, one that spawns Valentines' Bucketheads, one that spawns Prince Zombies, and one that spawns Lovestruck Gargantuars. Each type of machine has a sticker indicating what it will spawn: A zombie head for Basic Zombie, the respective headwear for Cone and Buckethead, and a pink question mark for Prince and Gargantuar.

Lunar Zoo Year

In Lunar Zoo Year, some of the signature lanterns that float across the lawn will drop candles when defeated. The candles will burn and instantly destroy any plant on the tile they land on and render it unplantable for 15 seconds.

Birthday Bashers

Birthday Bashers has portals. They appear on any tile of the lawn and spawn various zombies. Plants currently on the tile the portal happens to appear on will be displaced. The types of zombies spawned is indicated with the portrait of their respective world they are showing. The zombies spawned are usually fixed but customizable and spawn zombies in a randomized order. There is never any indication on whether they are going to appear on a level, nor the zombies they will spawn. Portals will close after a definite period of time.

The Arch-Magician can summon portals and Wrapping Potions, which wrap zombies in present boxes upon being stepped on. They cannot be planted on as well.

Heroic Showdown

In Heroic Showdown, there are Neptuna Sewers. Special holiday zombies that step onto them get washed off into their normal counterparts. The table below shows the full list of holiday zombies that can be transformed:

Miscellaneous

Craters are present in some levels, namely PS-IX, LCX-IX, and VLC-VIII. They only prevent any plants from being placed in their spot.

In A Small Ray of Light, a Timeless Avenue community level, there are prisms. Prisms are custom grid items that deflect projectiles to a certain direction, indicated by the arrow on them.

Sap-fling's attack will spawn sap on the tile it lands on which slows zombies down.
